Chapter 26

As I made my way through streets crowded with young, well-dressed people flitting from bar to bar at the start of what was sure to be a long Friday evening, I wondered what had become of my city. These were not my streets, where they used to roll the sidewalks up at 5 o’clock every day and the lonely glow of neon in the windows of a handful of corner bars were beacons in an otherwise desolate streetscape. And these were not my people, all of these young professionals laughing and talking loudly as they walked along the row of bars and restaurants, where they’d think nothing of throwing a twenty on the bar and not getting any change.

Gone were the homeless people. Mayor Riddell had pulled a Giuliani, all right. Hell, there wasn’t even anyone out of fashion there anymore. No one but me.

I was an alien in the place I called home. And I was all alone.
